There are a number of reasons why people love their furniture and one of the reasons is that they like how it looks. With something like furniture you have to take steps to insure that it always looks as good as the day it was delivered.

Taking care of your upholstered furniture is something that should be done on a regular basis. Once you learn how to clean upholstery you will be able to quickly clean it as part of your ordinary cleaning routine.

When you are vacuuming the floors take a minute and vacuum the furniture. This will remove the surface soils and prevent the dirt from embedding into the fabric fibers. If you prefer not to vacuum it you can use a soft brush to sweep the dirt away.

Periodically turn the cushions that are loose in order to extend the life of the furniture. This allows for any wear to be evenly distributed and will slow down the development of indentations. It also helps if you fluff the cushions regularly to help them retain their shape.

And you can also swap the cushions from one area to another to evenly distribute the wear since some of the cushions will be used more frequently.

If at all possible keep the furniture out of direct sunlight. Excessive sunlight can cause your upholstered furniture to quickly fade or fry. Be especially careful with silks since they are pretty delicate.

Be aware that airborne pollutants like smoke or cooking fumes can cause damage to the fabric. Of course it’s hard to avoid cooking fumes, but by providing proper ventilation the danger will be decreased.

Many times prevention is the easiest way to keep things clean. If you are trying to avoid stains and dirt on your fine furniture, don’t be afraid to make some rules regarding how the furniture is used. Don’t allow anyone to eat or put their shoes on any of the furniture in the living room.

For the dining room, where people are intended to eat, choose chairs with machine washable covers. Also keep pets off of any furniture that you are trying to preserve.

Fabric protectors are fabulous and should be used at every opportunity. If the upholstery has been treated with a fabric protector it is usually very simple to blot up a spill. If you don’t have a protector on the upholstery you will need to move pretty quickly when a spill occurs.

Blot up as much of the spill as you possibly can with a clean, dry towel. Always blot, never rub, as rubbing can cause further damage to the fabric.

It’s also a good idea to keep a spot remover on hand that is made for use on upholstery. Carefully read the instructions on the bottle that will tell you exactly how to clean upholstery with the product. Be sure to test it in an inconspicuous area to be sure that it won’t damage the fabric.

Using a soft brush, gently work the spot remover into the fabric, using a circular motion. Once it is dry, vacuum the fabric.

Every few years you may want to hire a professional to come out and clean the upholstery. If a piece of furniture is allowed to become overwhelmed with dirt, it will be difficult to return it to its former beauty. To keep your furniture looking beautiful it is a good idea to learn how to clean upholstery.
